Hyundai-Kia has overtaken Ford as the fourth largest global automotive manufacturer, according to new data.
The data from the Automotive News Data Centre shows that the Korean partnership has overtaken Ford which saw its sales fall by more than 30% the first half of 2009. The Korean car brand sold 8,000 more vehicles than the US motor manufacturer in the first half of 2009.
Last year Hyundai-Kia trailed Ford by around 1,000,000 sales, but the Korean manufacturer claims that it 'produced the right products for the right times' in its bid take fourth place from Ford.
Ten years ago the newly unified company was in 11th place overall, but new factories being built in several countries including Slovakia, the United States and China have helped to move it up the order.
Toyota is still the largest global manufacturer even though it has experienced a 21% drop in sales over the past 12 months. GM is second and Volkswagen third.
PSA Citroen, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki and Renault round out the top 10 largest car makers.
