Tentatively dubbed the SLS eDrive, the electric supercar will be heavily based on the standard SLS, but will offer eco-conscious performance car buyers a zero-emissions option.

“With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance,” said Volker Mornhinweg, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, in a statement released by the automaker.

The SLS eDrive will use much of the SLS’ standard hardware, but will swap out the SLS’s vertical front suspension design for a horizontal system. The change shouldn’t affect the SLS eDrive’s handling but will provide more room for front-mounted electric motors.

Gaining a four-wheel drive setup, the SLS eDrive will use four in-wheel 133 horsepower electric motors. The motors will be hooked to a torque vectoring device, allowing for the wheels with the most grip to get the majority of the power.

In all, the four electric motors will be good for 525horsepower and 649 lb-ft. of torque. Although that horsepower figure is down slightly from the gas-powered SLS, the SLS eDrive will have nearly 200 lb-ft of torque more than the standard car, which should give it roughly the same performance as the gas model, according to Mercedes-Benz.

Performance-wise, Mercedes-Benz say that the SLS eDrive will make the sprint from 0-60 in about 4 seconds with a top speed of 120 mph. The eDrive’s lithium-ion battery should be good for between 93 and 112 miles, with a full charge taking between 6 and 8 hours, depending on the power source.

Although the SLS AMG is expected to debut later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, it will still be a while before the SLS eDrive finds its way into Mercedes showrooms. Thanks to its complicated electric drive, the SLS eDrive isn’t expected to make production until 2015.
